IL Chicago Portage Park

Portage Park is a Chicago IL neighborhood nestled on the city’s northwest side. Primarily a residential area with affordable homes for sale, Portage Park has a sizable business district named Six Corners. Chicago’s largest commercial center outside of the Loop, Six Corners is situated at the intersection of Irving Park Road, Cicero Avenue, and Milwaukee Avenue. The Portage Theater, which opened in 1920, is in the area. It’s one of Chicago’s oldest movie houses, though it now functions as a performing arts center.
Patio Theater, also in Portage Park, opened in 1927. Movie-goers can still watch films in this beautifully restored theater that features a grand neo-Pompeian lobby and the theater’s original pipe organ. Another feature in the neighborhood is the National Veterans Art Museum. Art created by veterans and inspired by military combat is preserved and exhibited at the museum.
Among the green spaces in the neighborhood is Chopin Park, which was named after the most famous pianist in Poland, where many immigrant families in the area are from. The namesake park spans 36 acres and is where Mark Spitz set a world record in the 1972 U.S. Olympic swimming trials. Near the park are popular flower shops, bakeries, and more. Portage Park is also home to Dickinson Park, Dunham Park, Grace Zwiefka-Thuis Playlot Park, Lucy Gonzales-Parsons Playlot Park, and Wilson Park.
Portage Park is a segment of Chicago that appreciates libraries as much as it does green space. There are three branches of the Chicago Public Library in the community; and they are Portage-Cragin, Austin-Irving and Jefferson Park libraries.
Excellent public transportation options in Portage Park include plenty of train and bus routes, providing quick access to downtown Chicago and many other destinations.
Some of the neighborhoods Portage Park real estate is bordered by include Harwood Heights and Dunning to the west, Forest Glen and Jefferson Park on the north side, Harwood Heights and Dunning to the west, and Belmont-Cragin as well as Irving Park to the south.
